Afrohead Rum and the To Sir, With Love

Afrohead Both Story

Last month, The Mix Lab partnered with Afrohead rum on a unique project.  We highlighted the life of a Bahamian and a specially crafted cocktail. It was fitting to start with Sir Sidney Poitier and a Rum Old Fashioned. In 1964, Poitier became the first Bahamian and first black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor, and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor for his role in Lilies of the Field. Poitier was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1974. From 1997 to 2007, he served as the Bahamian Ambassador to Japan and as simultaneously to UNESCO from 2002 to 2007.  On August 12, 2009, Poitier was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the United States’ highest civilian honor, by President Obama.
